How long should you wear a cast after a fracture? Dr. Mohammed Bilal, Orthopedic, Fracture, Trauma
🩹 How long should you wear a cast after a fracture?

One of the most common questions after a broken bone is, 'When can my cast be removed?' The answer depends on the type of fracture, the bone involved, your age, and how well your bone is healing—not just the number of weeks.

⏳ General healing timelines:
🦴 Finger: 3–4 weeks
🦴 Wrist: 4–6 weeks
🦴 Forearm: 6–8 weeks
🦴 Ankle/Foot: 6–8 weeks
🦴 Tibia (Leg): 8–12 weeks

⚠️ Never remove your cast without your orthopedic doctor's advice. Even if the pain has reduced, your bone may still be healing. Removing a cast too early can lead to delayed healing, bone displacement, repeat fractures, or even the need for surgery.

🚨 See your orthopedic doctor immediately if you notice:
✔️ Severe pain inside the cast
✔️ Swollen fingers or toes
✔️ Numbness or tingling
✔️ A cracked, loose, or wet cast
✔️ Foul smell coming from the cast

Healing is a journey. Regular follow-ups and X-rays help ensure your bone heals safely and correctly.
