Why Does Your Hip Hurt When You Sleep on One Side? Dr. Mohammed Bilal, Orthopedic, Trauma, TKR, THR
🦴 Why Does Your Hip Hurt When You Sleep on One Side?

Do you wake up with hip pain after sleeping on one side? If the pain is mainly on the outer side of your hip, prolonged pressure during sleep may irritate the muscles, tendons, or bursa around the hip.

🔎 Common causes include:
✅ Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
✅ Hip bursitis
✅ Hip osteoarthritis
✅ Muscle strain or tightness
✅ Gluteal tendon problems
✅ Previous hip injury

💡 What may help?
• Try sleeping on your back or the opposite side
• Place a pillow between your knees
• Avoid prolonged pressure on the painful hip
• Maintain hip and gluteal muscle strength
• Get evaluated if the pain persists

⚠️ Don't ignore hip pain that repeatedly disturbs your sleep, affects walking, causes stiffness, or continues for several weeks. The location and pattern of pain can help identify the underlying cause.
